E-GRADEBOOK ...
GOAL: At least a handful of teachers will pilot with at least one class
for remainder of year ... full roll out in the fall
Features
Include ...
The Teacher Portal
- 24/7
access from anywhere (inside or outside district)
- "Print
Views" of class gradebook sorted by student number or name
- Simple
backup to text file of grade data through "export" command
- Built
in e-mail system, giving teachers the ability to email parent/student
users either individually or by group. (For example, a teacher
can send a “heads-up” email to every student who
received a zero on a recent assignment or who is currently scoring
below
70%.
On the flip side, a teacher could easily email “job
well done” emails
or even periodic newsletters of classroom happenings.)
- Single
click ability to view student users who are "on the system"
- Quickview
of each of your students' schedule
- Hyperlink
capability for every assignment. Teachers can link assignments
that appear in their E-gradebooks to descriptions
of the assignment,
additional resources (like a classroom PowerPoint that
went with the class lecture), or other web sites. (Teachers currently
have the ability
to upload files to their individual home pages on the Eastern
Web Site. To see an example of one teacher who has embraced
the possibilities
visit Science teacher Leanne Winterowd’s page on http://eastern.lansingschools.net/scripts/teacher/ )
The Parent/Student Portal
Parents of students under 18 and students 18 or older will have to
sign a form asking for access to the system. (Due to FERPA and privacy
considerations, accounts will not be automatically generated). In addition,
they will have to provide at least one, and up to five, valid email
address(es) so they can receive their randomly generated password for
initial entry.
After logging in, highlights include:
- 24/7
access from anywhere to view the student’s
current grades as teachers input them.
- Quickview
of student’s
schedule and current class average
- Deepview
of every assignment and corresponding grade in each class.
- Assignmentview
- the user can click on each assignment and see a more complete
description, or visit a link
to the actual assignment – providing
of course that the teacher linked it.
- E-mail
capability to contact each teacher directly through the system.
Next Steps
...
- For those
interested in trying out the system we will create a user account now ...
pick any username and password you wish (I suggest your email address or
your CIMS ID)
- If you would
like your students to have access to the system as well, let me know and
I will provide you with a parent/student E-gradebook access request form
ASAP (by Monday at the latest). As the forms are turned in, you can put them
in my box and the accounts will be activated.
- If you
are interested in helping more with this project, please join the
"E-Gradebook Informal Committee" - this committee will help answer
user questions, keep track of bug reports, make suggestions for improvements,
and help design a plan for full roll out next year.
