What
is CAS ?
CAS
(Creativity, Action,
Service) is a process of experiential learning designed
to involve students in new roles. It is an opportunity to extend
what is learned in the classroom to a form of service. The most
meaningful CAS experiences come from spending time with others
to build relationships and develop the self-worth of both the
server and the served. CAS is the heart of the IB diploma programme.
IB
Diploma students must complete 150 hours of CAS during their junior
and senior years, typically spending three to four hours a week
on their projects. Time should be divided equally between the
three areas.
1. Creativity –includes a wide range arts and projects that
show creative expression
2. Action –includes participation in individual and team
sports, as well physical activity in service projects
3. Service – includes community or social service
Guiding
questions to ask when selecting a CAS project:
1. Is the activity a new role for me?
2. Is it a real task that I am going to undertake?
3. Does it have real consequences for other people and for me?
4. What do I hope to learn from getting involved?
5. How can this activity benefit other people?
6. What can I reflect on during this activity?
CAS
is not:
1. Any class or activity for which the student receives credit
2. Any activity for which the student receives compensation
3. Doing simple repetitive work
4. Family duties or activities
5. Fund raising with no clearly defined purpose
6. Work experience that only benefits the student
7. Religious activities that include any form of proselytizing
8. Any activity where there is no leader to evaluate and confirm
student performance
* Family members may not approve hours or sign documentation forms
Guidelines
• Students enrolling in the Diploma program may begin earning
hours the summer following their sophomore year.
• CAS requires 150 hours minimum, divided equally among
the three areas. Students are challenged however, to excel beyond
the minimum requirement.
• Although it is recommend that projects undertaken for
CAS are designed to incorporate a long term commitment, students
should make an effort to participate in a broad range of activities
in order to maximize their CAS experience.
• Students will be expected to have completed at least 80
hours of CAS before the start of their senior year.
