EASTERN HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY 2005-2006

IN ORDER TO MEET THE STATE OF MICHIGAN MANDATED HOURS OF INSTRUCTION, EASTERN HIGH SCHOOL WILL ADOPT THE FOLLOWING ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Students are expected to be in school. A significant lesson to be learned in school is the importance of regular attendance. Each day, in class, learning is taking place. These learning experiences can never be duplicated. When a student is not in attendance she/he is missing a valuable portion of his/her education.

Students who are late to class will be marked tardy and sent to the attendance office for a pass. Two tardies will equal one absence. If a student is more than 15 minutes late to class, he/she will be considered absent. They will be responsible for making up any work that they miss due to an absence.

Students are limited to ten (10) absences per class per semester. Students will lose credit for the class unless one of the following actions are initiated:

ABSENCE WAIVER PROCESS

If a student has an extended absence due to extreme illness, hospitalization, death in the family or an extended health related absence, she/he may qualify for a waiver of the policy. All appeals must be written and include appropriate documentation. They are to be filed with an assistant principal within ten days of the absence in order to be acted upon. FAILURE TO MAKE THIS DEADLINE MAY INVALIDATE THE APPEAL. The appeal panel will be appointed by the building SI committee.

ABSENCE MAKE-UP PROCESS

Make-up time will be addressed through the atendance waiver process. Make-up time will be assigned and/or waived based on reasons stated and supplied on the attendance waiver. Make-up time will be assigned by your assistant principal. ATTENDANCE WAIVERS ARE DUE WITHIN 10 DAYS OF THE ABSENCE AND MAKE-UP TIME MUST BE MADE UP WITHIN THAT SAME TIME FRAME.
